Building a workflow normally requires understanding BPMN – building blocks, gateways, sequence flows, and configuring individual ServiceTasks. For many firms, that’s the biggest hurdle to taking automation into their own hands. This is exactly where the DEPLAW skill for Claude Code comes in: you describe what should happen in plain language – and get a finished, fully reviewable workflow.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is an AI assistant made by Anthropic that lets you describe what you want done in completely ordinary language – as a chat, not a programming language. Originally built so that software developers could have it do programming work, at its core it works like a highly capable chat assistant: you write a task in your own words, Claude Code asks follow-up questions if anything is unclear, and then delivers a result you can review and have corrected if needed.

What is a “skill” – and what does the DEPLAW skill do?

Generally speaking, Claude Code can write code and perform tasks on a computer – but out of the box it knows nothing at all specific to DEPLAW: not how a DEPLAW workflow file needs to be structured, not which functions (ServiceTasks) your practice management software even offers, and not which rules the workflow engine used by DEPLAW follows.

A skill closes exactly that gap: it’s a collection of domain knowledge and instructions on a particular topic that is additionally “handed to” Claude Code – like a reference book that Claude Code reads before doing the actual work. The DEPLAW skill contains exactly that knowledge about DEPLAW: the complete catalog of all available functions, the rules of the workflow engine, and what a technically correct, importable workflow, form, or text-block model has to look like. Equipped with this knowledge, the general-purpose AI assistant becomes a specialized workflow builder for your specific software.

Why this is so valuable

The combination of the two – an AI assistant that understands any automation idea in plain language, and a skill that knows the entire world of DEPLAW functions – means: in principle, you can have every recurring process across your entire firm automated, without having to master BPMN yourself or memorize the function catalog. You describe what should happen – from a single standard reminder letter to multi-stage processes spanning several practice areas.

Crucially: the result is never an invisible AI automation that just starts running in the background on its own. What you always end up with is a perfectly normal, standardized BPMN model – the same notation used by workflows built manually in the Workflow Editor. Every step, every condition, and every function is visible in it as a box and an arrow, and can be opened, traced, and changed if needed. So you get the speed of AI-assisted creation and the assurance of a fully auditable, documented automation – nothing goes live that hasn’t first been reviewed as a BPMN diagram.

How it works

The skill knows the complete DEPLAW function catalog – every ServiceTask a workflow can use to access your practice management software (generating and sending documents, creating bookings, setting deadlines, reading participant data, running AI prompts, and much more) – as well as the specifics of the customized workflow engine used by DEPLAW. From a description in your own words, Claude Code then builds a valid BPMN model that fits precisely to this engine.

From a description like this, a complete BPMN model emerges with the matching ServiceTasks (e.g. NewLetter/NewPostLetter for sending, a timer event for the deadline, and NewResubmission for the follow-up) – without you needing to know these names.
